Product Description
Who are you? When you start to explore this question, you find out how elusive it really is. Are you a physical body? A collection of experiences and memories? A partner to relationships? Each time you consider aspects of yourself, you realize that there is much more to you than any of these can define. In this book, spiritual teacher Michael Singer explores the question of who we are and arrives at the conclusion that our identity is to be found in our consciousness, the fact of our ability to observe ourselves and the world around us. By tapping into traditions of meditation and mindfulness, Singer shows how the development of consciousness can enable us all to dwell in the present moment and let go of painful thoughts and memories that keep us from achieving happiness and self-realization.

Divided into five parts, the book offers a frank and friendly discussion of consciousness and how we can develop it. In part one, he examines the notion of self and the inner dialogue that all of us live with. Part two examines the experience of energy as it flows through us and works to show readers how to open their hearts to the energy of experience that permeates their lives. Ways to overcome tendencies to close down to the rest of the world are the subject of part three. Enlightenment and the embrace of universal consciousness are the subject of part four. And finally, in part five, Singer returns to daily life and the pursuit of "unconditional happiness." Throughout, the book maintains a light and engaging tone, free from heavy dogma and prescriptive religious references. The easy exercises that figure in each chapter help readers experience the ideas that Singer presents.

5 out of 5 stars Read it!   July 24, 2010

I am a psychotherapist specializing mainly in eating disorders and problems related to anxiety and depression. I have spent years searching for an "accessible" book about these important existential issues. When I recommend other books related to meaning in life/ spirituality/meditation my patients tend to come back disappointed. More often than not, they won't even get through a few chapters, because of the flightly metaphors and "new agey" feel. While Singer also uses metaphors, his metaphors are clear, simple and make abstract concepts more concrete (and therefore more accessible to my patients.) He only gets "new agey" with his discussion on energy, but by that point he's hooked you with such rational explanations, my skeptics just skim right over it. I can sometimes spend an entire session discussing a patient's "inner roommate" described in the beginning of his book. This book finally explains complex and difficult topics in a way my patients are able to understand and utilize. I can speak for at least 3 patients (thus far), as well as for myself--this book can be a life-changer and at the very least spark some very productive therapy sessions!

4 out of 5 stars Understanding our psyche and what to do about it   July 21, 2010
D. Johnson (Raleigh NC)
I enjoyed the author's views of how our psyche gets formed from the earliest interactions. Not sure that I agree with his translating seemingly everything (thoughts, feelings, etc.) into "energy" terms -- maybe so, maybe not. His solutions seem a bit too simple at times -- almost like "just say no." He doesn't seem to recognize just how firmly those "blocks" or energy patterns or thought patterns are entrenched in our minds and how difficult and frightening it can be to move away from them. It's easy enough to picture how much "better" you and your world would be, but it's often just not as easy as he portrays things. Still, we used this book in a study group and it brought up some great discussions.

3 out of 5 stars OK, but will it change your life?   June 5, 2010

Another book in the vast library of writings that explain (quite profoundly, in Singer's case... his analogy of the house in the meadow is wonderful) why we have a problem, and what our lives would be like if we did not have this problem (pain, suffering), but provide very little guidance on bridging the gap between the two. Like Krishnamurti, Tolle, and countless others before him, Singer has a true gift for describing the starting point and the end point on the map towards liberation/freedom/happiness, however, what is almost entirely lacking from these teachers is instruction on how to go from point A to point B.

God bless you if you are one of those rare individuals who can read these beautiful words, follow what little instruction is given (for Singer, simply "let go" and "don't close your heart") and truly change your life. For the other 99.99% of us, stick with books/teachers that can guide you on your journey (see Gunaratana, Daniel Ingram, and teachers like S.N. Goenka and Shinzen Young as excellent examples). Better yet, go on a retreat (and start a daily practice) where you can learn how to develop concentration and mindfulness.

Singer acknowledges as much on page 145 when he says "you will have to stay conscious, centered and committed at all times." He goes on to say "you will have to stay one-pointed on your commitment to remain open... if you have trouble remembering that, then meditate."

Do you want to stay one-pointed? Learn to concentrate. Do you want to stay conscious and centered? Cultivate mindful awareness and acceptance. In other words, meditate, meditate, meditate... preferably under the guidance of a qualified teacher. If you choose instead to just read the maps and listen to words, your life long habits of scattered thoughts, avoiding pain, and clinging desire will likely never abate and you'll continue to suffer the rest of your life.

5 out of 5 stars Untethered Soul is a Great Read   May 19, 2010
D. Johnson (USA)
This book helped me understand the energies of my past and how not dealing with those energies affect my life today! I had so many 'aha' moments as I read this book. The biggest one was when the author addresses depression and the second one was when he explained how energy/emotion get trapped in our heart chakra.
